I recently watched The Neverending Story II: The Next Chapter. It wasn't till now, 2 decades later, that I would see it in different light. Referencing Eckhart Tolle’s Power of NOW understanding of the ego.
In the movie the sorceress Xayide casts spell on Bastian in the form of a Bowl contained all of his memories (Orbs). The Bowl contained his memories (Orbs) which could be interpreted as parts of the ego self. Every time Bastian made a wish he would lose a memory or part of the story of himself. At the end of the movie when he only has one memory left, of his mother. He could've wished her Xayide dead, but instead does something self-less. Knowing his last an most valued memory will be gone he wishes she had a heart. All her power used for negative means is distilled into tear of love (the Heart Chakra) and is powerful enough to transform Fantasia from ruins back into a paradise.
